2002 Canadian Ringette Championships set to hit the ice in Regina
Over 450 athletes to compete for national titles in fast-paced, dynamic sport
Regina, Saskatchewan – Preparations are well underway in Regina as the 2002 Canadian Ringette Championships get set to hit the ice. Over 450 athletes from across Canada will be in the area from April 1 to 6, to compete for nationals titles in three divisions - Junior (ages 14-15), Belle (ages 16-18) and Open (ages 19 and over). The athletes represent 26 teams from all provinces, except Newfoundland and the territories, and will compete in round-robin play throughout the week. The finals in all three divisions are scheduled for Saturday, April 6.
"Regina is very proud to be hosting the 2002 Canadian Ringette Championships," said Keith Doering, co-chair of the 2002 Canadian Ringette Championship organizing committee. "We look forward to welcoming athletes from across the country and being able to showcase such an exciting sport in our own community."
Sponsors for the event include SaskEnergy and SaskTel. Nearly 250 volunteers will also be involved in the event.
"The community support we have received in hosting this event has been tremendous," added Doering. "This event would not be possible without the assistance provided by our sponsors and our many volunteers and we are very grateful for their cooperation."
This year’s championships represent the 24th annual competition for the sport. Over the years, ringette has gained considerable momentum and popularity in Canada. There are currently over 24,700 players on more than 2,000 teams across the country with over 1,800 officials and over 5,000 coaches. A number of the players competing at this year’s event have also been vying for a spot to represent Team Canada at the upcoming World Ringette Championships being held in Edmonton. The final selection camp will be held in May and the chosen team will then compete for gold in November.
"Events like the 2002 Canadian Ringette Championships being held in Regina are a perfect opportunity to profile our dynamic sport and provide athletes with a forum to compete at a national level," said Bill Hubbs, executive director for Ringette Canada.
At last year’s championships, held in Moncton, New Brunswick, Manitoba captured gold in the Junior division while Alberta took the gold in the Belle and Open divisions. The 2003 Canadian Ringette Championships will be held in Waterloo, Ontario.
