The Government of Canada has declared Ringette a Heritage Sport. This designation recognizes the unique nature of Ringette within Canadian sport, and the Government has committed special funding “to help heritage sports flourish so that they will continue to contribute to Canada's national identity and culture. Funding for the Canadian Heritage Sport Fund was established...to encourage participation by young people, and to further develop these sports.”
The funding allocated to this designations allowed Ringette Canada to launch its Community Outreach Program in 2008.
In our first season, we used that funding to conduct Community Outreach activities in five locations across Canada. For the 2009-2010 season we hope to grow the program and expand the number of communities we visit.
In each community our goal is to introduce Ringette or to help an existing Ringette organization build some momentum.
Through contacts with local media, and key people in local Parks and Recreation departments and local volunteers we are able to promote the sport. We then provide the community with a cadre of Instructor Athletes to work in the schools to conduct Gym Ringette sessions with the local students. These efforts culminate in FREE on-ice Come Try Ringette Sessions.
All of this at little or no cost to the local community!!
