2019 Credit Union Canadian Ringette Championships hit the ice in PEI

Charlottetown/Summerside, PEI – April 8, 2019 – It was an action-packed opening day at the 2019 Credit Union Canadian Ringette Championshipsthat kicked off in Charlottetown/Summerside, PEI today. Forty-five teams from across the country are competing for national titles in the U16 and U19 divisions, as well as the National Ringette League championship title.

In the U16 division, the hometown PEI Wave team downed team Ontario 2-1, in likely the biggest upset of the day. Charlottetown’s Sophia Jeffery picked up the pair for PEI. In other U16 play, seven of the 19teams came out of the first day of competition undefeated. Zone 2 (AB) beat PEI 6-3 in the first game of the day and then went on to beat Central Alberta Sting 1-0. Team BC (LMRL Thunder) beat Cyclones de Quebec 7-4; Team Quebec (Rive-Sud) downed Team Nova Scotia 6-3; Spruce Grove Rage beat Team Saskatchewan (Regina Stingers) 9-7; Calgary Core downed West Ottawa 4-3; GCRA (ON) beat Calgary Crew 4-3; and Team Alberta (Calgary Impulse) beat the Saskatoon Selects 9-3 and Team New Brunswick 3-1. Zone 2’s (AB) Kennedy Rice (Airdrie) led the opening day scoring in the U16 division with eight points.

In the U19 division, the hometown PEI Wave had a strong first day, downing Zone 5 (AB) 6-4. Charlottetown’s Robyn Power scored four for PEI. In other U19 play, half of the 18 teams came out of the first day of competition undefeated. Laurentides (QC) beat Team Manitoba (Magic) 6-3 and downed Team BC (LMRL Thunder) 9-3; Guelph Predators beat PEI Wave 7-3 and downed Team Manitoba (Magic) 7-3; Nepean Ravens downed Team BC (LMRL Thunder) 3-2 in overtime and beat the Saskatoon Blazers 7-6; Calgary Rush downed Zone 5 (AB) 5-1 and posted a 6-3 win over the Saskatoon Blazers; Calgary Rogue beat Team Nova Scotia 8-2 and downed TORL Force (BC) 9-2; Team Saskatchewan (Regina Bandits) beat Team Nova Scotia 10-1 and CORA (Ottawa) 7-4; Team Quebec (Lac Saint-Louis) downed CORA (Ottawa) 6-5 and Team New Brunswick 8-5; and Edmonton Elite beat the BVRA Angels (MB) 2-1. Delphine Aguiar (Laurentides), Hailee Parsons (Calgary Rogue) and Guelph Predators’ Claire Wyville (Morriston) led the opening day scoring in the U19 division with eight points each.

In the National Ringette League division, Montreal Mission opened the day downing Calgary RATH 7-5. Cambridge Turbos beat Manitoba Intact 6-5, while Waterloo Wildfire downed Ottawa Ice 7-3. In the last game of the day, defending National Ringette League champions, Atlantic Attack downed Edmonton WAM! 8-4. Bouctouche’s Martine Caissie led the opening day scoring in the National Ringette League division with seven points.

Games are taking at Credit Union Place in Summerside, Bell Aliant Centre in Charlottetown, APM Centre in Cornwall and Pownal Sports Centre in Alexandra. Competition in all divisions started today and gold medal finals in all three divisions take place on Saturday, April 13 (U16 at 10:00 ADT in Summerside, U19 at 13:00 ADT in Charlottetown, and NRL at 15:00 ADT in Charlottetown). All-stars and the NRL Annual Awards will be announced at the closing ceremony on Saturday night in Charlottetown.
