Canadian officials announced for upcoming world ringette championships in Helsinki
Ottawa, Ontario – September 23, 2015 – Ringette Canada today announced the selection of Jaimie Nelson (High River, AB), Amy Murray (Courtice, ON), David Jones (Beaverbank, NS) and Danielle Lalonde-Clarkin (Ottawa, ON) as the Canadian on-ice officials for the upcoming 2016 world ringette championship taking place in Helsinki, Finland from December 27th, 2015 to January 4th, 2016.
“We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong officiating program that continuously develops exceptional officials at every level of our sport,” said Nathalie Muller, technical director, Ringette Canada. “Jaimie, Amy, David and Danielle have repeatedly proven their officiating capabilities and we are pleased they will represent us on the world stage in Helsinki.”
2015 has been proclaimed the ‘Year of Sport’ in Canada, which aims to celebrate the role that sport plays in our Canadian identity. Ringette Canada fully supports this proclamation and encourages all Canadians to celebrate sport in their communities.
Ringette is a Canadian sport that was invented in 1963 in North Bay, Ontario by the late Sam Jacks. There are currently over 30,000 players on nearly 2,000 teams across Canada, with over 1,500 officials and nearly 8000 coaches. Internationally, it is played in more than a half a dozen other countries around the world. Ringette has been designated a Heritage Sport by Sport Canada and as part of the Sport for Life movement, ringette is well advanced at adapting Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model.
