Gloucester Devils down Calgary RATH 7-6 in double overtime nail biter at national ringette championships
Wood Buffalo, AB – March 31, 2015 – The only thing more exciting than overtime at the 2015 Tim Hortons Canadian Ringette Championships is double overtime and the Gloucester Devils and Calgary RATH did just that today in the National Ringette League (NRL) division. Calgary’s Shaundra Bruvall tied it up at six late in the fourth forcing overtime and the two teams battled it out and went onto double overtime. Nepean’s Kaitlyn Youldon scored the game winner with help from her sister Kelsey and Nepean’s Alison O’Brien. The Youldon sisters each picked up two goals and an assist in the game.
In other NRL play today, Montreal Mission remain undefeated after downing Ottawa Ice 7-5 and beating Waterloo Wildfire 10-7. The Cambridge Turbos are the second team left undefeated after the southern Ontario powerhouse shut out Richmond Hill Lightning 8-0 and downed Gloucester Devils 7-3. Cambridge’s Meghan Pittaway recorded the shut out over Richmond Hill.
In the U19 division, Ontario, Alberta and the Nepean Ravens remain undefeated. Ontario beat Manitoba 7-1 and posted a 6-2 win over Central Alberta Sting. Alberta posted a 3-2 overtime win against Quebec and a 2-1 win over British Columbia. The Nepean Ravens downed the Regina Bandits 10-9 in overtime and also beat Quebec 8-2. Nepean’s Molly Lewis dominated the scoring today with nine goals and five assists and leads the U19 scoring with 24 points. Lewis picked up seven goals and two assists in the win over the Bandits and two goals and three assists in the game against Quebec.
In the U16 division, Ontario and Alberta are the only two teams left undefeated. Ontario beat New Brunswick 5-4 and shutout British Columbia 7-0. Tillsonburg’s Haleigh Cole posted hat tricks for Ontario in both games and Chatham’s Sarah Woods recorded the shutout between the pipes. Alberta downed Manitoba 3-2 in overtime, with Calgary’s Shayla Hendry picking up the overtime winner. Alberta then went on to post a 6-4 win over Quebec’s Outaouais Extrême.
There are 37 teams competing at the event and games are taking place at the Frank Lacroix Arena, MacDonald Island Park and Casman Centre in Fort McMurray as well as the Anzac Recreation Centre and Fort McKay Arena. Competition continues all week and the finals will be held on Saturday, April 4th (U19 at 11:30, NRL at 13:30 and U16 at 16:00). All-stars and the NRL Annual Awards will be announced at the closing award ceremony on Saturday night.
