National Ringette League Community Outreach Program kicks off Saturday

Ottawa, Ontario – October 26, 2016 – The National Ringette League (NRL) has entered its thirteenth season and this weekend Ringette Canada will launch its second NRL Community Outreach Program. The aim of the program is to bring awareness of the NRL to the local ringette community, as well as to the non-ringette community through school visits and media promotions. Last season, the program visited seven communities with over 4000 people attending the featured NRL games.

Ringette Canada has hired a three-person NRL Community Outreach team, which includes: Amanda Begin (Ottawa, ON), Jessie Davis (Ottawa, ON) and Claudie Gagnon (Montreal, QC). The team will kick off the program this weekend in Gatineau, Quebec when the NRL’s Gatineau Fusion host the Ottawa Ice during the Super Festival IGA Extra de Gatineau.

“We are very excited to be kicking off our second Community Outreach Program this weekend in Gatineau,” said Frances Losier, Director of High Performance and Events with Ringette Canada. “The program was very successful in raising awareness of our league last season and we look forward to Amanda, Jessie and Claudie putting their passion and creativity to work this season.”

Throughout the upcoming season, the NRL Community Outreach team will visit up to eight communities to promote the sport of ringette through already scheduled National Ringette League games. Each person in attendance at the featured games will have their name put in a draw to win a trip for two to the 2017 World Ringette Championships taking place in Mississauga in November 2017, with the grand prize draw being held on April 1, 2017.

The kick off game between Gatineau Fusion and Ottawa Ice will take place on Saturday October 29th at 6:00 pm EST at Baribeau Arena in Gatineau and is presented by Charles Family IGA Extra. The Super Festival IGA Extra de Gatineau will also feature a Come Try Ringette event and U19AA, U16AA, U14A & U16A games between Gatineau Ringette Association and City of Ottawa Ringette Association. Admission to the NRL game is free with a cash or food donation to the food bank. For those not in the Gatineau area, the entire day will be webcast through the following link: https://livestream.com/accounts/5897788/events/6315178

The 2016-17 ringette season in Canada has been given the True Sport theme of “Give Back” and aims to celebrate the role that teams, clubs and members play in giving back to their home communities. Each featured NRL game will be free to attend, however there will be some initiative to “give back” to the community instead of paying admission.
