Ottawa selected to host 2020 Canadian Ringette Championships

Ottawa, Ontario – November 13, 2018 Ringette Canada today announced it has selected Ottawa as the location for the 2020 Canadian Ringette Championships. The 2020 event will be the 42nd national championships for the sport and represents the second time the Ottawa region has hosted, with the 1996 event being held in Gloucester. Ottawa also hosted the 2007 World Ringette Championships.

“The Ottawa host committee, comprised of the City of Ottawa Ringette Association, Ottawa Tourism and the City of Ottawa, presented a very strong bid package, with strong support from ringette associations in the surrounding areas,” said Natasha Johnston, Executive Director, Ringette Canada. “We are confident that our athletes and fans will be treated to a memorable experience in Ottawa and we look forward to working with this group to deliver an outstanding event in 2020.”

“Ottawa is proud to host the 2020 Canadian Ringette Championships and to welcome Canada’s best ringette players to the nation’s capital,” said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. “Our city has a strong ringette history and community, along with a number of vibrant clubs and associations. I encourage residents and visitors to join me in discovering this fast growing and exciting sport.”

The event will be held April 5-11, 2020 and will see between 40-48 teams from across the country competing in three divisions – U16, U19 and the National Ringette League (NRL) division (19+). It is expected the event will bring over 3000 visitors to the region. The 2020 championships will be held at the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre, the Richcraft Sensplex, and the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex, with the gold medal games taking place at TD Place.

“Our entire association is thrilled to host of the 2020 Canadian Ringette Championships, and to work with all of the associations within the National Capital Region Ringette League to organize this event,” said Phyllis Bergmans, President, City of Ottawa Ringette Association (CORA). “We look forward to welcoming family, friends and ringette enthusiasts from across Canada to see this growing sport and to enjoy the best that ringette has to offer. We hope to create an experience that will last a lifetime for everyone involved.”

“Hosting this important Ringette Canada event will provide the opportunity to showcase elite athletes in Canada’s Capital, and generate considerable economic impact and media visibility for the City of Ottawa,” said Michael Crockatt, President & CEO, Ottawa Tourism. “We were pleased to support the Host Organizing Committee with the bid and know that Ottawa will prove to be a magnificent setting for the event. We wish the committee every success and we look forward to working with them as hosts for the 2020 Canadian Ringette Championships.”
